1. How is it powered?

3 options: electric, gas, and believe it or not - cordless. Deciding which one you want depends on your use. Cordless won't run very long, so you are limited to small cuts where you don't need much power. With an electric, you will be tethered (limited) by your electrical cord. A gas powered saw will allow you to cover anything from the smallest to the largest needs.

2. What is the length of the bar? (the bar is what the chain goes around)

3. How big an engine will you have?

Obviously the bigger the horsepower the more power. Typical HP is from 2-6.

4. What is the motor displacement?

A good displacement will generally be between 50 - 70cc, with the greater the number the more power.

5. How is the chain oiled?

Keeping the chain lubricated is very important. Just make sure you know how it is done before buying. Most have self-oiling mechanisms, but just be aware.

6. How do you adjust the chain tension

It depends on the manufacturers, but you will have to periodically check and tighten your tension, so you want it to be easy to do.

Some manufacturers make their saws to have quick adjustments while others require you to do it manually. If you must do it manually, make sure the adjustment knobs or bolts are easily accessible and not hidden under some plastic guard.

7. What kind of break, or safety feature does it have to stop the chain if something goes wrong?

All should have a quick shut off, of some sort, in case of jam or kickback.

Some have a big plastic guard that gets pushed back and shuts off the saw.

Others have an inertia detector that detects sudden motion change and shuts off the saw. (These obviously cost more)

8. How does it start?

Most have a pull start, but more manufacturers are coming out with devices to make starting easier. Some "easy start" saws have special decompression valves while others have special springs.

9. How is the vibration?

Manufacturers try to minimize the vibrations and such are different for each manufacturer.

Just another thing to look for - do they advertise anything along this line.

10. Does it come with a carrying case?

Most do now a days. Just be sure!

This is a really powerful machine. It has the same engine as the 420 model, which is a hefty 56.5 cc power unit. It puts out over three and half horsepower and this is put to good use in creating a blower air speed of 181 miles per hour with a volume of air moved of 465 cubic feet per minute. These measurements are taken at the end of the tube which means that this is exactly what hits the leaves when you aim the tool at them. The main difference between this machine and the 420 is that it has a smaller tube diameter. This has the effect of creating a faster air speed.

Compared with other smaller engine models it could be considered as being a bit of a gas guzzler. Never the less the engine has reduced emissions compared to earlier versions. 

The BR380 Stihl backpack blower is reasonably easy to start. When cold it can take four to five pulls and when warm one to two pulls. There is no primer for the fuel and this may explain the extra pulls needed. Once going it runs very smoothly and accelerates quickly without hesitation, even when cold. Considering its ability it is reasonably quiet creating a noise level of 73db. You can get a vacuum kit and a spray conversion kit to make this tool even more versatile. 

In terms of ergonomics the straps and back pad are very comfortable and it is easy enough to put on. The machine weighs just over 20lb which means that it can get to feel a little heavy after you have used it for a while. The easy grip throttle is trigger operated and is positioned on a handle attached to the down tube for easy access. There is also an on off switch and cruise control which means that you can set the power you want to use and don't have to keep the trigger held all of the time. There is a built in top carry handle and tool holder.  It can be a little difficult to use in confined spaces. However in wide open areas it is very easy to use and very powerful.

Electric chainsaws arrived much later than the gasoline-driven models, which were in use for logging since the 1920s. Chainsaws running by means of electric motors gained popularity rapidly among saw-users on account of several advantages. Unlike the gasoline-powered models, electric versions appeared as smaller, lighter, and more easily manageable devices that could be used by laymen for managing their home-gardens. In addition, their maintenance is easier and cheaper than their petrol-driven competitors.

Electric chainsaws also offer the great advantage of being environmental-friendly i.e. free of any toxic emissions. However, the electric type has also some disadvantages or limitations as compared to a gasoline chainsaw.

Advantages of Electric Chainsaws

Using these chainsaws offers a number of advantages over using a gasoline-operated saw. A major advantage of working with an electric vs. gasoline is the reduced risk of kickback-a potentially life-threatening situation occurring when the saw's bar jerks back toward the user after the bar's end hits some obstruction.

The electric type is run by less power than a gasoline saw and hence it has a lower chance of making a kickback. Secondly, using them obviates the trouble of waiting for the engine to cool down (as is the case with a gasoline chainsaw) in order to refuel it. All the user needs to do with an electric is plug it back into the mains. These chainsaws are also much easier to start and they are much less noisy than gasoline chainsaws. This latter quality makes them ideal for use in quiet neighborhoods. Finally, they can be stored more easily than a gasoline-operated saw, which needs to be drained of gas and oil before storing in a vertical position.

Disadvantages of Electric Chainsaws

Working with the electric also has some disadvantages or limitations. The major limitation on using them is that of power. Compared with the more powerful gasoline chainsaws with their two-cycle engines, they are significantly lower on power. Hence, it is not very useful in felling heavy loads and is equipped with a much smaller cutter bar i.e. 8 to 15 inches. Another limitation on the usability of the electric version is the power cord that connects it to the source of electric power. The length of the cord determines the mobility of the saw-operator and it is not feasible for him/her to use it far from the power source or outside home. Finally, these chainsaws are specially designed for maximum safety, which makes it difficult for the user to adjust or oil the chainsaw's parts.

The first recorded example of people using air pressure to remove leaves comes from Japan in the 19th century, when gardeners used bellows to clean up mossy ground.

It has been claimed by others and widely circulated around the internet that the Japanese then were the first to have the idea of adding a hose and motor, around 1970, and then sold the machines into the USA. If they did, they were by then copying developments that had already taken place in the USA and Europe.

The concept for the blower as we now know it started in America in the 1950s as part of agricultural crop-spraying 'mist blowing' equipment.

Some key early milestones are as follows:

1950 Echo Inc. of the USA (also an early hedge trimmer manufacturer) introduce the first engine-powered backpack duster/sprayer. It is used to dispense pesticides in nurseries and on crop farms.

1951 Public Works Director of Hartford Connecticut, Charles Cook, has the idea of using two of their snow blowers to remove leaves. He warns they 'can only be used when leaves are wet because dry leaves would be blown for blocks...'

1955 Echo create the backpack duster/mist blower DM-9.

Late 1950s Consumers are found to be dismantling the chemical dispensing equipment and just using the powerful blowing unit. (It is claimed by a Wikipedia contributor that one Dom Quinto was the inventor of the modern leaf blower in the late 50s, but there is no corroboration of this entry and it may be fanciful or mischievous).

1959 H.L. Diehl, an ex-Pratt & Whitney jet engine technician, develops what his company claims 'the first walk-behind lawn vacuum and leaf blower'.

1963 One of the first examples of a backlash against leaf-blower noise when the city of White Plains takes action following complaints.

1960s The Dutch Vandermolen company is making and exporting a 2-stroke engine backpack blower.

1966 H.L. Diehl re-brands his company as Giant-Vac. They introduce a range of machines.

1969 Giant-Vac introduce the first leaf-loading machine that collects leaves as well as blowing them around.

2004 Briggs & Stratton buys out Giant-Vac and creates a Yard Power Products Group focusing mainly on commercial markets.

2007 First recorded game of leaf blower hockey is played in Toronto.

Late 2000s First 4-stroke motors appear to meet tougher emissions laws in various US states and in other countries. Cordless battery models become viable due to more powerful Nicad and lithium-ion batteries, e.g. Ryobi models with 120mph/ 193 km/hr air speed.

Recent trends in leaf blowers:

Machines have got quieter: many petrol-engined models now emit less than 65dB at 50 feet, whereas older machines were 70-75, which in decibel terms is hugely greater. Operators' hearing could be impaired by these old devices. (It is still recommended that ear defenders be worn by any user). The move to electric (corded or cordless) has also reduced average machine noise.

Brands that claim excellent emissions reductions in their petrol models include Echo; Hitachi, whose 2-stroke Pure Fire motor meets the US Phase 2 and Euro Stage 2 regulations; and Makita, who have gone over to 4-stroke engines, including the world's lightest 4-stroke handheld machine at 4.4kg (the equivalent Hitachi 2-stroke is 3.9kg so that is a fine achievement for the traditionally heavier engine technology).

There is increasing popularity for the more versatile vacuum/blowers that can also suck up dust or gather leaves and mulch them before collecting them in a bag to avoid the collection chore, as well as aiding the composting process. Electric and petrol combination machines now abound, from lightweight Flymo and Black & Decker models to wheeled hand-push devices from GMC and Warrior and powered-wheel machines from Billy Goat. Suction machines also counter criticisms that simple blowers raise harmful dust and are damaging to nearby plants. Their extra versatility may well be appreciated more and more in years to come.

Other innovations include electronic 'Touch Start'12V battery starting on petrol machines (from Ryobi) to avoid the chore and uncertainty of pull-cord starts. Others have an easy-start carburettor to make the pull leas onerous.

The early history of the leaf blower has been somewhat affected by controversy but it is undeniably popular and it has a permanent place in garden and commercial applications due to the much greater productivity that it affords when compared to a man with a rake and spade. Machines will continue to improve and get greener, and consumer choice will grow even further.
